Captain V Presidents Day photos 18th September 2024
Match Report Staddon Heights - Wednesday 18th September 2024
Well what a day, 14 players out to do the business of not only the golf but in two teams as well. This was to contest the newly resurrected Captain v President Challenge for the Claret jug. With the weather gods on our side, tea/coffee Bacon rolls put away, it was off to do the business. The two teams would not only play for the usual monthly Stableford competition but at the end of play would also find who they were playing in the match, as the names were drawn out by both the Captain and the President to see who won that point. The course was in very good condition although the wind did play a part on some of the holes, but overall scores were mostly in the mid 20’s.
Golf over it was back to the Elburton for food fines and results. Food was great with the new menu choices thanks to the Elburton for that. Fines went as usual with cross table banter and voices raised in protest.. Right meals over it was time to find out first of all which team had won the Claret Jug:
Captains Team Presidents Team
Bill Sandell (captain) Dave Hood (President)
Richard Trafford Howard Coffey
Jo Trafford Tony Cunningham
Chris Groves Tony Young
Steve Body Mick Speller
Reg Hackworthy Martin Walker
Chris Thorpe Phil Davidson
Result was a win for the Presidents Team with a 4.5 to 2.5 points win
Both the Captain and President gave speeches and the port was passed around in traditional manner along with small gifts from both. We will not mention the claret jug, but a new one is on its way, donated by Mick Speller.
On to the main competition:
NTP 15th Phil Davidson (bottle of wine)
NTP 17th No winner
3 balls Chris Thorpe (donated by Steve Body)
In 3rd place with 32 points Tony Cunningham
In 2nd place with 35 points Phil Davidson (bottle of wine)
In 1st place with 36 points Howard Coffey (bottle of wine)
Mr Captain Bill Sandell thanked the Elburton for the food and looking after us, and stated that the society was a family and that we grow in friendship both on and off the course. Which he said was the reason we have lasted so long. He then said that next months game would be at Stover on Thursday 17th October playing for not only the Eclectic but the Memorial Trophy as well, plus it is steak night. Mister Vice Richard Trafford also thanked the committee for all their hard work in keeping the society running.
Overall a great day was had by all, and looking forward to our last match of the season at Stover.
On the subject of the Christmas dinner, it has bee brought forward to Wednesday 4th December due to other bookings.
Tired but happy it was off home for a well earned rest.
See you all at Stover
Match Report Dainton Park Wednesday 21st August 2024
Our annual visit to Dainton Park was well attended, unfortunately on the day we lost both Mick Speller and Chris Groves to an illness.
We wish them both a speedy recovery and a quick return to the fold they were missed.
Our visit to Dainton Park this year was well attended with 14 players, the weather was kind to us which in turn resulted to some good golf Being played and good scores coming in.
In the evening 13 members attended the Elburton Hotel for a meal, results and fines.
The result of the match was as follows:
1st place. Graham Haffenden with 38 pts
2nd place. David Hood with 35 pts (ocb)
Nearest the pins
4th hole. Rob Oak

Each received a bottle of wine.
It was nice to see Jo Hood playing today and playing well 33pts, don't leave it so long next time Jo.
There was a lot of banter over the fines in particular the Mars bar wrapper and Tony Youngs strong language. However the fines and the golf voucher put us in the blue for the day, well done.
The Captain mentioned that our next match will be played at Staddon Heights on the 18th September. This match will be 2 fold each player will play their full handicap stableford as normal which will keep the societies Eclectic scores going. They will then be drawn against an opponent from Captains / Presidents team and the player with the highest Stableford score between them will win a point for their respective teams. It is requested that all golfers who will be playing at Staddon enter their names ASAP so the teams and draw can be be made.
It was also discussed at the meal that hopefully for next month we will have a menu which will give us more food options, this will be put on the website once we have spoken to landlady.
Thanks was given to the Elburton staff for the meal.

Match Report Boringdon Park Wednesday 31st July 2024
With the weather really hot and only 11 players this month we finally got to play the much postponed game at Boringdon Park. Tea/coffee Bacon Rolls put away it was off to do battle out on a very dry course, and boy was it close at the top, with 7 players with scores of 30 or more. Some outrageous scores from a certain player with a 5 pointer and the most outrageous NTP on the 15th, namely Rob Oak, but well done and a big cut.
Golf over it was back to the Elburton for food fines and prizes. Fines were feisty and full of banter as usual, with the Captain Bill Sandell fining Mick Speller for not cutting the handicaps of certain people (now rectified). Prizes went as follows:
NTP 7th Steve Body
NTP 15th Rob Oak
3rd place with 33 points Rob Oak
2nd Place with 35 points on count back Steve Body
1st Place with 35 points on count back Reg Hackworthy
Mr Captain Bill Sandell bought a round of drinks for everyone and said that he was really grateful and proud of all the Society. He went on to say that it was the true support of the society members that held the Society together after some 20 years and we are now in our 21st year. Bill thanked the Elburton and the committee for their efforts, and went on to say that next month will be at Dainton Park and would be £40 per person, Dave Hood offered to keep it at £35 and pay the difference but was thanked and instead said that he would buy the first round of drinks when we get back to the Elburton. The Society will also subsidise Jo Trafford at Dainton Park, and watch out for additional notices with regards to Dainton as we have a 4 ball voucher which will be used to off set costs. There being nothing else it was goodnight to some and the rest went back to the bard for a few more light refreshments before going home.
Hope to see you all next month at Dainton Park Wednesday 21st August

Match Report 19th June 2024
Elfordliegh GC
With 13 players and the weather gods on our side, we mustered at Elfordliegh for our 3rd game of the season. The course was in good condition although the pin positions were a little tight, but everyone got round ok with the general scores in the mid to high 20’s. One point to make and me and my group were to blame was a serious breach of slow play. This is not acceptable, and we were fined accordingly. As in the rules of golf you must keep up with the pace of play and consider if necessary to allow players to be called through. Common faults are with people sharing buggies, leaving the buggy one side of the course when over the other side or helping out finding a lost ball. Consideration should be taken into account when sharing a buggy as to the possibilities of becoming the cause of slow play. Game over it was back to the Elburton for our evening meal, fines and prizes.
Fine went down well with the guilty parties fines accordingly, then it was on the prizes and they were as follows:
NTP 6th – Jo Trafford
NTP 10th – Richard Trafford
3 balls went to Phil Davidson
3rd place with 32 point went to Steve Body
2nd place with 33 points went to Tony Cunningham
1st Place with 35 points and a cut went to Howard Coffey
Mr Captain Bill Sandell reiterated the slow play and highlighted the need to keep up with play. He went on to thank the Elburton for the food and for all those that played today. Bill then made a statement with regards to the sad passing of one of our long standing members Mike Ward who will be sadly missed and his name will be put on the Memorial trophy played for at the end of each season. Bill went on to say that Mike’s funeral would be at 2.00pm on Monday 24th June at Weston Mill Crematorium and for those attending please wear if possible a society Tee Shirt. The Wake will be held at the Hyde Park social club. Bill asked Phil to find out what charity if there is one for Mike and the society would make a nominal donation. (Late edition donations to Courtland School)
Our President Dave Hood then thanked all the members and the committee for keeping the society going.
Mr Captain then reminded everyone about next month with 2 venues, them being
10th July at Ashbury Manor £35 all in
31st July at Borringdon Park.
There being no further business, it was goodnight to some and back to the bar for a few more light refreshments before going home.
Match Report Wednesday 22nd May 2024
St. Austel GC
A very reduced field today as only 10 players available. With the weather gods almost on our side, just a few showers on the way round, we set off to do the business. There were a few contrasting scores over the front and back 9’s with Jo Trafford having a great front 9 and Steve body having a great back 9, but overall on what was a fairly difficult day we all managed get round ok with most scores in the mid 20’s, that is except Reg Hackworthy who carded a great 38 points.
Golf over it was back to the Elburton for our evening meal, fines and prizes. Rob Oak and Martin Walker could not make the evening but both gave £5 towards the fines, well done Martin who has now become our long distant player, well done much appreciated your commitment to the Society.
Prizes went as follows:
3 Balls Martin Walker
NTP 2nd Dave Hood
NTP 16th Rob Oak
3rd Place with 29 points Dave Hood
2nd Place with 31 points Mick Speller
1st Place with 38 Points Reg Hackworthy (and new handicap of 20)
Mr Vice Richard Trafford thanked everyone for attending, he thanked the staff for the Food, along with thanks to Howard for standing in for Bill with the finance side and to Mick and Steve for their efforts. He went on to say that details for the club shirts would be sent over to Steve as we try to finalise the logo and costing etc. Last but not least Richard hoped to see a full turn out for next month at Elfordleigh on the 19th June. With nothing else it was goodnight to some as the remainder of us went back for a few more refreshment before going home.

Wednesday 24th April 2024
Well we finally done it and got the season off to a good start. The weather was fine for once and a great turn out of 15 players minus 1 as Jo Trafford had to take Richards Dad to the hospital but joined us for the evening meal. To say the least the course was very demanding with loose grass cuttings and the first rough cut very long, which meant lots of time looking for balls, and frustrating for our first time out since last year. Still we all made it back safe and sound and joined up at the Elburton for our traditional evening meal, fines and prizes. Great food as usual and the Captain Bill thanked the staff for looking after us.
Prizes went as follows:
NTP 7th No winner
NTP 15th Chris Groves
3rd Place Richard Trafford
2nd Place Harry Bradley
1st Place Tony Cunningham
Mr Captain thanked everyone and as there was no winner of the 1st NTP gave the bottle of wine to Jo Trafford as a thank you for giving up her day out on the golf course. Bill thanked everyone and apologised for not being able to attend next month venue at St. Austel, but said that vice Captain Richard Trafford would be there and that we would be in safe hands. As for the club Shirts more progress was needed and those involved would get back to the society as things progressed.
Last but not least The President Dave Hood thanked the Committee and Steve Body for their work in keeping the society running. There being no further actions, it was back to the bar for a few more light refreshment before going home.
Hope to see you all next month At St. Austel Wednesday 22nd May teeing off at 1200
