Match Report Boringdon park May 2021
Well what a day, finally getting together for our first game in over a year. Not as many as we would have liked but 11 players out on the green stuff giving it all. The weather stayed dry although a little windy, and for our first time out some good steady scores. I can say for myself, it was the first time on a course or hitting a ball since Stover 18 months ago. Great company once again and those out there enjoyed the day. One sad set back was the news of Paddy Fitzgerald being in hospital with Colon Cancer, and having had surgery was in the recover ward. Speedy Recovery Mate from all of us.
Game over it was once again back to the Elburton for food and a few drinks as well as prizes. As said there were some good steady rounds out there today and coming in 3rd after a sticky start but a back nine of 18 and a total of 30 points was Dave Hood. In 2nd place after going off like a train and 22 points on the front nine, but a bit of tiredness on the back nine was Howard Coffey with a total of 34 points. The winner with his new handicap of 18 (now 17) and a total of 37 points with 2 no returns was Mr Captain Mike Ward, great round of Golf Mike.
Mr Vice Tony Young said it was great to see the Society back on the road again and thanked all those that made it happen. He said that he looked forward to seeing as many of you as possible next month at Staddon Heights on the 16th June teeing off at 1300. On behalf of the Treasurer Bill Sandell it was stated that due to across the board increases in costings the standard rate for each match will go up to £35.00 (from £32). There being nothing else to report it was back to a few more beers before going home happy.
As a footnote: In his Lord Mayors introduction Chris Mavin gave a welcome message of support for our Magily GS and the fact that we raise money for Charities. Thank you Chris.

On a grim side, have spoken to Paddy today and it is not looking too great, and that the cancer may have spread to his kidneys. However he is due in for more tests on Friday. He told me he was ok and accepts whatever will be will be. We the Society wish him all the best and that our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.
Match Report – Wednesday 21st July at Elfordliegh GC
Well what a turn out 19 players on what was to become a very hot and testing afternoon of golf. It was a hard slog for those walking and the scores showed just how hot it was. We lost John Lockwood who had to retire feeling not too well. Speedy recovery mate, missed you at the meal. Had a group photo in memory of Paddy Fitzgerald before teeing off at 1300.
Golf over it was back to the Elburton for food and prizes. A lot of very hot and bothered team mates looking forward to a cold drink to cool ourselves down. As it was very busy in the Elburton (group and birthday bash), fines were restricted to £2.00 a head in the pot.
The prizes went as follows:
Longest drive – Adam Searle

Henry Cooper has proposed that we have a Paddy Fitzgerald Memorial Trophy, and that he is willing to purchase the trophy and it be awarded on the last game of the season, to be kept for one year. The players thanked Henry for his kind generosity.
The Elburton staff were thanked for all their efforts on what was a very busy night for looking after us, and the food was spot on.
Next month we are at China Fleet on Wednesday 18th August teeing off at 1304. So lets have a great turn out and hopefully not too hot a day (but dry).
Last but not least, a quick reminder of when playing Stableford, to keep up with play and if you can not score a point then pick up and keep the game moving.

Match Report 18th August 2021
A good turn out of 16 players to do battle. A bit of a hold up going over the Tamar bridge but everyone made in time. Along with the game was once again a 4 ball team competition, making it a little more interesting. A very long and tough course and the fringes were very punishing, hence the average scores were in the 20’s. at least it stayed dry and it was not too bad on the journey back, the road had cleared by then.
It was back to the Elburton for food, fines (£2.00 in the pot as it was getting late), and prizes.
Team comp: Bills team 85, Kens team 88, Daves team 91 and the winners were Rogers team of
Roger, Mike, Dave Lockwood & Tom with 94 point and 3 balls each.
No longest drive but 2 NTP
Winner NTP 7th – Mike Ward
Winner NTP 15th – Ken Elford
Lowest score and 3 balls John Lines
In 3rd place with 32 points was Roger Cox
In 2nd place and runner up trophy was Dave Hood with 34 points
And the winner and winners trophy was Mr Captain Mike Ward with 35 points and a cut to 17.
Mr Vice Tony Young thanked everyone, thanked the Elburton and staff for looking after us, and hoped to see as many of you as possible next month at Borringdon on the 22nd September.
We all wished Chris Mavin a speedy recovery after his Knee job. Get better soon mate.
Please take note of the re-assessed Handicaps based upon the last 4 scores. Some handicaps have gone up and others gone up but not quite increasing your Handicap. All changes are highlighted in red.
Nothing else to talk about so it was to the bar for a few more light refreshments before going home.
Hope to see you all next month, as always

Once again a great turn out with 16 players out to do the business. Nice to have tea/coffee Bacon roll on arrival, sets one up for the round. Along with the main comp we had the 4 ball comp running as well, makes it more interesting trying to support your team as a 4 ball. The weather was great not too hot but dry and very little wind, and this reflected on the overall scores coming in.
Golf over it was back to the Elburton for food, fines (£2.00 from all as it was getting late) and prizes. The food was great and thanks go out to the staff for looking after us.
The 4 ball comp went as follows:
4th place was Chris Mavins team with 86 points, 3rd beaten on count back was Phil Davidsons team with 93 points, 2nd on count back was Bill Sandells team also with 93 points. But the winners and a tube of 3 balls each was Ken Elfords team with 97 points.
Once again no longest drive but two NTP
NTP on the 7th Bill Rowell
NTP on the 13th Chris Mavin
Both receiving a bottle of wine.
The main competition went as follows:
In 3rd place beaten on count back was Bill Rowell with 33 points
In 2nd place with 33 points and the runner up trophy was Chris Mavin (well done after your knee op)
But in 1st place with 35 points and the winners trophy was Ken Elford
A big thanks by all went to Henry Cooper for providing the Society with a Paddy Fitzgerald Memorial trophy. This will be played for on the last game of each season, going to the winner and retained for one year.
Mick Speller reminded everyone that next month the envelopes for Players Player of the Year will be handed out, and just to remind all that Mike Ward can not be put down as he won it last time.
Mr Vice Tony Young again thanked everyone for a great day out and hoped to see a full house for the last game of the season next month playing at Staddon Heights on Wednesday 13th October, teeing off at 1204. Tea/coffee bacon roll o/a and main food back at the Elburton Steak night.
There being no further items, it was back to the bar for a few more light refreshments before going home.
See you next month.
Match Report Staddon Heights
13th October 2021
What a great day, weather brilliant and a course in perfect nick to end our shortened season. Would have been a little better if the numbers were up, but some were away and our thoughts go out to Henry’s wife Tracy (after surgery) and Dave Lockwoods wife Get better soon. So it was 13 out to do the business, with the Eclectic up for grabs as only 3 points separated the top 2. It was a shame that one group was held up by a Holiday 4 ball (must be taught the rules of golf etiquette), but overall it was a good day for scoring. With the news coming in that Graham was tearing up the course, and others doing well, the Eclectic looked like going to the wire.
Golf over it was back to the Elburton for food, fines and prizes. Great meal Steak night and thanks to the Elburton Staff. And so it was down to the prizes, but before that Tony Young gave a short speech to say that Santander was still willing to match our charity funds collected. Well done Tony.
So on to the prizes:
There being no one on the greens for NTP, the wine went to Graham Haffenden for his 2 2clubs on the 2nd and 17th
As stated the Eclectic went down to the wire, and Dave Hoods 3 point lead, was pipped at the post by Graham Haffenden winning by just one point, so winning the Eclectic Trophy for 2021. Final scores
Graham 47 points, Dave 46 points.
On to the main competition and some very good scores.
Lowest score Martin Walker and a full box of balls
In 3rd place with 32 points beating Mike Ward on countback was Phil Davidson
In 2nd place and his best round for a very long time was Mick Speller with 37 points and the runner up trophy.
But in 1st place and a clean sweep was Graham Haffenden with a outrageous score of 44 points (a big cut) and the winners Trophy.
Plus Graham wins the Paddy Fitzgerald Memorial Trophy to hold for one year.
The Players Player of the year will be decided at the Xmas dinner as not everyone was there this time.
The Xmas dinner will be on Wednesday 8th December, I have the menu and will be putting it on the web and emails shortly.
Finally Mr Captain Mike Ward thanked everyone including the Committee for their hard work during the season. So it was back to the bar for a few more light refreshments before going home.
