The first game of the season was played on the 22nd March 2017 at Staddon Heights Golf Club, there were 16 players and the weather gods shone down on us, we all played rain free golf.
The winner of the golf with 39pts and playing on his own course was David Hood, runner up was Phil Davidson with 35 pts, followed in 3rd place was the Captain Mark Vinall with 33pts.
The nearest the pin was won by Ken Elford and the longest drive was Mark Vinall. Sean Mitchell picked up the sleeve of balls for trying and John Lockwood collected £16 for the 2 ball.
At the Ship in the evening the Magilly Golf Society along with the generous donation given by Santander Bank gave a cheque to prostrate cancer for £500.
We all enjoyed our fish and chips, fines were collected and Sean Mitchell collected dummy of the month.(see Photos) A good day and night was enjoyed by all.
Match Report Borringdon Park
Wednesday 26th April 2017
Not as many as we would have liked, but 14 players braved the weather, which once again was on our side to play at Borringdon. Tea/Coffee Bacon Rolls safely tucked away, it was out to do the business. Well what a tight competition it turned out to be, with no fewer than 8 players being within 3 shots of the leading score. Golf over it was back to the Ships Tavn for food, fines and a few drinks, plus the prize giving.
Sponsors for the NTP/LD were Mick Speller & Bill Sandell, both of which went to Phil Davidson (who said he had just run out of red wine), well done Phil. There were two 2 clubs, Dave Hood & Paddy Fitzgerald with £7.00 each (Paddy’s held over as he had to leave early).
Main prizes went as follows:
3rd place with 35 points – Dave Hood
2nd place with 36 points – Ken Elford
Winner with 37 points – Graham Haffenden
Winner of the Dumb shot award went to Tony Young for his consistent bunker play
Mr Captain Mark Vinall thanked everyone and as said above congratulated all for such a tight finish, stating that the scoring is getting much closer, and not so much a one sided competition any more. He mentioned the walking wounded and thanked them as well for getting round with no further injuries.
Thanking the staff and his committee, it was back to the bar for a few light refreshments.
Footnote: Could we have the final numbers that will be going on the away weekend asap. Plus for those that are not on the away weekend, but will be playing the club match on the Friday 22nd, can you please let either Bill or myself know so as to organise additional food etc on the day.
See you all next month at the China Fleet Club
Match Report – China Fleet Club
Wednesday 24th May 2017
What a glorious day, 17 players out in the sun to do the business. It was a welcome back to Harry Bradley and old timers Reg Hackworthy and Steve Body. With the weather on our side, we only had one retiree and that was our Captain Mark (duly fined) who had had too much sunshine after the 16th. But the day belonged to two of our high handicappers. After a close match, it was back to the Ships Tavern for food, fines, and prizes.
With only one 2 club the money went to Mike Ward who managed to put the ball less than 10inches from the hole – great shot Mike and thus won the £17.00 pot.
NTP – obviously went to Mike Ward, with the LD going to Dave Hood
Thank’s to both Henry Cooper & Dave Hood for sponsoring this months NTP/LD prizes
Runner up with a great round of 36 points went to Dave Lockwood and the runner up trophy.
The winner after all these years (and as Bill Sandell said it’s because he has now given up the treasurers job) went to John Lines with 37 points, and a quote from John ‘It’s about ruddy time’ and the winners trophy.
Mr Captain Mark thanked everyone and did apologise for leaving the course at the 16th , he also thanked his committee and asked everyone to thank the staff for a great meal (Carvery – just what was needed). He also reminded everyone that next month at Dainton Park was his Birthday, but unfortunately will not be back for the evening meal.
Bill Sandell our Treasurer asked that all those going on the away weekend and not already paid their deposit, please let him know by next week so as to inform Trethorne. Also, please can those that will not be going on the away weekend, but will be there for the Friday Match let us know, once again so as to inform Trethorne.
Business over, it was back to the bar for a few more light refreshments.
Cheers All, hope to see you at Dainton Park next month
Match Report – Dainton Park GC
Wednesday 21st June 2017
What a day, 18 golfers, Mr Captains Birthday and a Tropical Heatwave. With the course looking very slick, Bacon rolls etc put away, it was off to do battle. Really felt sorry for those that were walking, as it was very hot indeed. Still this did not deter anyone at all, as this venue brought in the best set of results for many a year with 10 of the 18 scoring 30 points or more. Sunburnt, hot and sticky, golf over it was back to the Ships Tavn for food fines and prizes.
Thankfully Mark and his staff managed to change the menu from a hot meal to a very nice buffet Salad (well done). With no 2 club this month the £18 will roll over to next month. Our thanks to our sponsors of the NTP/LD namely John Lines & Phil Davidson. The NTP went to Mike Ward with a carefully managed bounce onto the green. The LD was being held by Bill Sandell until Dave Hood with a 3 iron went passed Bill to claim the prize.
On to the main prizes, and a big pat on the back to all of you with some great scores coming in.
We had a team comp running as well and the results were:
Marks team 78, Kens Team 89, Phils Team 103, Bills team 107, and Johns team winners with 115
In 3rd place with 37 points beaten on count back was Bill Sandell
In 2nd place again with 37 points and the runner up trophy went to Paddy Fitzgerald
But in first place with an incredible score of 43 points and the winner’s trophy went to Dave Hood
Gentlemen with such good scores coming in the SSS was 35.
Fines over we thanked the staff, committee and sang Happy Birthday to Mark.
Bill stated that for the away weekend we have 11 so far and asked that if anyone had another person wanting to go please let him know asap. Mr Captain thanked everyone and brought up a general discussion on the handicap system being implemented by the society. After much discussion and the fact that most of us are there for the company and enjoyment of the game, no changes will be made.
Thirsty that we were, it was back to the bar for a few more light refreshments before going home tired but very happy.
As I am away next month, I hope that you all have a great day out at St. Austell on the 26th July.
Match Report St. Austel
26th July 2017
The Society played at St Austell on Wednesday 26th July , after a lot of discussion during the week about the weather it was decided to turn up and play if possible. It rained in the morning and was still raining as we travelled to St Austell on the day, on arrival the rain stopped and we all enjoyed a rain free round of golf. The wind was strong which made the course harder to play than normal.
17 players turned out and the scores were pretty close, there were 3 players with 31 points and after count back the results were:
1st place Howard Coffey
2nd place Dave Lockwood
3rd place. Henry Cooper
Thanks to our Sponsors today Paddy & Howard
Nearest the pin was Henry Cooper
Longest drive was Graham Haffenden
John Lines got booby
There were 2 shares in the 2 ball and Ken Elford and Mark Vinall shared the £37 pot.
In the evening we went back to the Ship for food, drink and of course the fines, a good day was had by all.
Match Report Elfordliegh GC
Wednesday 23rd August 2017
With 17 players out to do the business, it was fair weather and with Bacon rolls tea/coffee plus the odd beer or two inside us, we set off. Course was in a pretty good state, although some of the greens were a bit on the rough side, and I think this accounted for some of the lower scores. Still this did not deter anyone, as all had a good time out there on the course.
Golf over, it was back to the Ships Tavn for food fines and prize giving. We must thank the staff for a great meal (Carvery), which went down a treat. Lots of fines bantered around the room, with arguments for and against, but all had to pay in the end.
Sponsors for the NTP/LD were Graham & Steve – thank you both.
NTP went to Chris Mavin (who assured no one could get any nearer as he kept the pen)
LD went to Tony Young
Only one 2 club – so the £17.00 went to Reg Hackworthy
Main prizes
Last place to go with his £17.00 the 3 balls went to Reg
In 3rd place with 33 points went to Dave Hood
In 2nd place and the runner up trophy with 34 points went to Steve Body (great to see you coming back, and a cut to 27)
In 1st place and the winner’s trophy with 35 points went to Ken Elford and back down to 12
Our thoughts went out to John Lockwood with flu – get better soon, and John Lines, who had to retire after 10 holes as he was in a lot of pain – again John get better soon (get the 10’s machine out)
Bill Sandell asked that all of those going on the away weekend, please ensure that all money is paid up prior to arrival at Trethorne. For those that are not staying at Trethorne but will be playing on the Friday match day, could you please let either Bill or myself know asap so as to make final arrangement.
Mr captain thanked everyone and his committee, and we all went back to the bar for a few more light refreshments, putting the world to rights and general light hearted banter.
See you all at Trethorne on Friday 22nd September
Match Report Trethorne GC
Match Report for Away Weekend at:
Trethorne Golf Club. 22-09 to 24-09-2017
Friday 22nd:
Weather not on our side, 17 players including guests arrived at Trethorne to play the monthly match. Tea/Coffee bacon rolls put to one side, it was off to do battle in what one might say quite testing conditions. The scores at the end of the day did prove that the weather got the better of us.
Back in the warm and dry, those of us that were staying, moved into our rooms, except Mark, who for the whole weekend, I believe had his own private area in the mens changing room, (although did sleep in his room). At this point we said our farewells to those that were not staying as they made their way back towards Plymouth.
Only one 2 club, and the £17.00 went to Phil Winder.
Nearest the Pin went to one of our guests Bill Bedwell
Longest Drive went to Phil Winder
Well the main prizes went to two of our guests, with:
Dennis Crocker taking the runner up trophy with 29 points
And local man Bill Bedwell taking the winners trophy with 30 points
At this point we said our farewell to Bill, and hoped to see him in the future.
The now dirty dozen set off to fill their cups with the local nectar, and settle in for the weekend.
Harry a little worse for ware after more than a few glasses of wine staggered off to bed followed by the rest of us. Goodnight to day one.
Saturday 23rd:
What a difference a day makes, bright sunshine is the order of the day. Breakfast over, team ready, it was off to do battle for our Ryder cup. The dirty dozen in two teams of six, headed by the two team Captains Mark Vinall & Dave Lockwood set out to do the business. Results as follows:
Mark Vinall v Dave Lockwood – Dave wins 4 & 3
Phil Winder v Dave Hood – Phil wins 3 & 2
Bill Sandell V Dennis Crocker – Dennis wins 1up
Chris Mavin v John Lockwood – Chris wins 1 up
Mick Speller v Harry Bradley – Harry wins 4 & 3
Mike Crocker v Tony Cunnigham : Tony wins 3 & 2
Resulting in a win by 4 points to 2 to Dave Lockwoods team.
Showered and ready for the evening run, we all met up in the bar area awaiting our evening meal. Fed and watered (great meal), it was back to the bar for evening games of brag & pontoon, Harry bought the wine as a peace offering after his mishaps on Friday evening (not used to drinking so much) but thanks Harry. Well oiled it was off to bed to see what Sunday would bring.
Sunday 24th:
Not a good day – rain forecast all day. So it was off to breakfast and a gentle run home.
A good weekend was had by all and a big thanks goes to Bill Sandell for his organisation of the successful weekend.
Match Report Stover GC
12th October 2017
With the weather Gods on our side (what a glorious day), one of our largest fields (21) set off to battle for the last time this season. The three main contenders for the Eclectic went out first to see who would prevail over the final 18 holes. Great to see guests playing, including Bill Bedwell, Bill Rowell, and Richards wife Joe Trafford. Good to Steve Reeve & Roger Cox back as well. Well it was tight at the top as Dave Hood after a hectic few weeks fell away leaving Chris Mavin & Graham Haffenden to fight it out at the top, and it went to the wire, leaving both players with a final Eclectic score of 60 points. Joe Trafford was right up there with the rest of the field coming in with 25 points, and played really well.
Back to the Elburton for food and fines. Steak night was very good and our thanks go out the staff of the Elburton for accommodating us at such short notice.
Prizes went as follows:
2 club only one and that went to Dave Hood (about 12 inches from the hole) and the £21.00
NTP went to Dave Hood
LD went to Roger Cox
In 3rd place was Harry Bradley with 31 points
In 2nd place was Chris Mavin with 33 points and the runner up trophy
In 1st place was Graham Haffenden with 35 points a big cut and the winners Trophy
With 60 point a piece the Eclectic this year will be shared between Chris Mavin & Graham Haffenden
The Christmas dinner will be held at the Elburton on 6th December 1930 for 2000.
Dave Hood asked all members present to show their thanks to both Mick & Bill for all their efforts in running what has been a very successful Season.
Food, fines, prizes over, it was back to the bar for a few more light refreshments.
So here it is, the end of another season, hopefully will see you all at the Christmas DO.
(don’t forget a small raffle prize for the Charity Raffle)
