Match Reports 2019
Boringdon Park
Match Report 20th March 2019
What a nice start to the season, 17 players and good to see our old friend Ricky Lee back in the fold. Weather not too bad, a little overcast but no rain and the course in as good a condition for this time of the year. Bacon Rolls put away, it was off to do the business. A bit rusty for some, but great to be back on the golf course. Scores reflected on the break, with only two breaking the 30 barrier, and a whole host putting in scores in the mid 20’s. Golf over, it was back to the Elburton for the evenings festivities. First off was the presentation of the cheque to the Chestnut Appeal, unfortunately Leslie Anne could not attend, but Dawn Young from Santander along with the cheque for £800 was there to make the donation on behalf of the Society and Santander. Dawn Young was presented with a bottle of bubbly for the efforts and matching our own contributions towards the Chestnut Appeal. Well done to you all. Photo and report gone off to the Herald and local paper. Other photos on the web.Food over (great Fish & Chips), and fines put to bed, it was down to the prizes.
No 2 club this month, so money goes into the pot
Both the Longest Drive and Nearest the Pin went to yes you guest it Roger Cox (going to handicap him next month and make him play left handed on the NP & LD).
In second place with 32 points and the runner up Trophy went to Mike Ward
In first place with 35 points went to Ken Elford and the winners trophy.
Mick stated that next month will be at Staddon Heights on the 24th April teeing off at 1304, limited to only 4 buggies here. Also once the menu goes on the web/email, please if you want something different to that of the choice, please let us know in advance and the Elburton will oblige (no Harry you can not have Lobster). Mick then handed over to the Captain Chris Mavin.
Chris warmly thanked everyone for turning up today and said it was great to be back and playing. He also thanked the staff of the Elburton for a great meal and their support of the Society. A big thanks went to Bill and Mick for their continued running of the Society, and last but not least Chris Hoped to see everyone at next months venue.
And so it was back to the bar for a few more light refreshments before going home tired but happy. See you all next month
STADDON HEIGHTS
Wednesday 24th April 2019
The weather at Staddon had us going from woolly hats and waterproofs to short sleeves and shorts, but at least the rain kept away.
15 players started on a course which was in a superb condition, if a fraction windy at times.
Phil was todays winner with 35 points and Roger took runner up on countback from Harry and Ken all on 33. Howard was ntp and Graham had the longest drive.
Back to The Elburton for a delicious chicken or fish meal and a few beers
Chris and Bill then presented the prizes thanking those who played today and sending our best wishes to the sick and ailing also thanking Teresa and her staff for their service.
This left the non-drivers to have the obligatory "few more beers" to finish off another great day.
Match Report Elfordliegh
Elfordliegh GC Wednesday 22nd May
Well what a great day, weather could not have been better. So 15 players out to do the business on a course that was in really good shape. Scores coming in were fairly tight at the top, and overall scoring was good with five players recording a score above 30 points.
Golf over it was back to the Elburton for food, and as usual the service was great. Food and fines over, it was time for the prize giving.
Only one 2 club and that was Phil Davidson with a 2 on the 15th (Phil asked for the money to be put back into the pot) many thanks Phil great gesture

So it was back to the bar for a few more light refreshments before going home.
Match Report Whitsand Bay
June 26th 2019
Well it’s a long time since we last visited Whitsand Bay. Sixteen players and the weather really great, although the wind was very strong. Fed and watered, it was off to do the business, and yes the wind was playing a good deal with the scores coming in. However the top six had scores of 29 or more. Game over a little wind swept and a slight sunburn it was back to the Elburton for food fines and prizes.
Food great as usual, and the fines bantered around the table, it was on to the prize giving.
Running alongside the main competition we had a team comp. the results as follows:
Team Graham 77 points, Team Bill 92 points, Team Hood 96 points, and the winners were Team Ken with 102 points and a sleeve of balls each.
No 2 club today, so the money goes back into the club funds.
No NTP as the wind made this hole very difficult.
LD and a bottle of wine went to Tony Young
In second place with 30 points and the runner up Trophy went to John Lines after count back with a great 19 points on the back nine, beating Mike Ward, Phil Davidson and Dave Hood to the prize.
In first place with a great round considering the wind was Bill Sandell with 34 points and the winners Trophy.
Mick asked that in future the menu choice would close on the Monday prior to the venue, thus giving the Staff at the Elburton enough time to source the food requirements. Next month will be at Fingle glen on the 24th July teeing off at 1230. Maps were given out to those requiring them. Still have a few Prostate Cancer pins left for those still wanting one. Mick then handed over to the Captain.
Mr Captain Chris Mavin thanked the staff of the Elburton and the committee, plus those that attended today. Talked about the wind and what it did to his round, but enjoyed the company and day out. Chris said that he hoped to see as many as possible at Fingle Glen as it is the first time that we have played there. All done it was stay at the table for a few more light refreshments, as the HHH were taking over the rest of the bar area. A good day had by all, see you next month.
Match Report Fingle Glen GC
Wednesday 24th July 2019
Well what a great day after last nights thunder storms. Having not been to Fingle Glen before, it was a surprise to find such pleasant facilities. With golf tips on the back of a course planner it was off to do the business. Well tips and planner did not help too much as the majority found it difficult to understand which way to go on a lot of the holes. But manage we did, and everyone enjoyed this new and challenging course.
So it was back to the Elburton for food fines and presentations. As usual Theresa and her team did a great job with the Fish & Chips, well needed food to top up after a long day. Fines went around the table and it seemed that Harry was in the barrel, and with all those that went into the water paying a £1.00 on top of their fines.
With no 2 club – money goes back into the pot
NTP went to Bill Sandell
LD went to Roger the big hitter Cox
With 35 points and the runner up trophy went to roger Cox and another cut (12 now Roger)
But with a superb score of 36 points, and a bit of handicap protection toward the end of the round (tiredness) went to our senior member and club President John Lines plus a 2 stroke cut to 26 and the Winners Trophy.
Mick said that next month will be at China Fleet club on Wednesday 21st August teeing off at 1304. He then (embarrassed by forgetting who the vc was) handed over to the vice captain Mike Ward, who thanked the Elburton for their food and for looking after us, he also thanked his committee and hoped that as many as possible would be at the China fleet club next month. Formalities over, it was back to the bar for a few more light refreshments before going home.
See you all next month
Match Report China Fleet GC
Match Report Wednesday 21st August
Well what a turn out, 20 players and the weather fine. A bit of a mix up to start as we should have had 21 players, so a plan A & B were in force. It was plan B that we stuck to, to save any more disruptions to the tee off pairings. Yes it was a bit slow for some, but we all got round safely. The good weather gave way to some very good scores coming in, and some changes to their Handicaps. For those that did not do too well, look at your handicap to see if you have gone up one stroke.
Golf over, it was back to the Elburton for food, Fines and prizes. As usual the food was great, the fines took some time to get around the table, but was full of good humour as usual.
Down to the prizes:
With no 2 club the money goes back into the pot for Christmas
NTP went to Steve Body
LD went to Henry Cooper (nice to see you back with us mate)
The 3 balls went to Martin Walker (getting better all the time and was grateful of the advice given out on the course)
In 3rd place with 33 point was Howard Coffey
In 2nd place with 34 points and the runner up trophy went to Phil Davidson
But the winner and the winners trophy with 36 points went to Dave Hood
Mick asked that all players check with the web page prior to the Monday before the match to ensure that they have put down to play and selected food choice. (sooner the better please). This is to ensure we give the correct details to the venue prior to playing. A detailed menu etc for the Christmas party which is on Wednesday 4th December will be published by end of play after the Tiegn Valley venue.
Mr Captain Chris Mavin, first of all thanked the staff of the Elburton for the food and looking after us. He also thanked his committee for their continued hard work in ensuring that the Society functions well. Chris hoped to see as many as possible at next months venue Teign Valley on Wednesday 18th September teeing off at 1244, and continue with the great comradeship which this society has. Finally Chris thanked everyone for today and wished them well and a safe journey home.
To the rest of us, it was back to the bar for a few more light refreshments, and a good old chinwag
See you all next month

Match Report Teign Vally
Wednesday 18th September
Well what a great day, 17 players great weather, fed and watered (Bacon roll tea/coffee). It was off to do battle, on what is a very long and challenging course (if you like hills) and blind shots. Felt for those walking, but everyone survived and managed to come in with some very good scores. It was great to see Bill Rowell on the course again and a welcome back to Chris Thorpe after a years absence.
Golf over, it was back to the Elburton for Food, fines and prizes. As usual great food which went down really well after a long day. Fines were battled out around the table with the usual banter.
So it was on to the Prizes:
With no 2 club the money goes into the pot
NTP went to Steve Body
LD went to Roger Cox (quote after screaming one so far down the middle Oh is this the LD hole)
3rd place went to Graham Haffenden with 32 points
2nd place and runner up trophy went to Steve Body with 33 points
1st place and the winners trophy went to Mike Ward with 34 points

He also thank John Lines for stepping in to cover Treasurer duties in the absence of Bill Sandell. Next month is at Stover on Thursday 24th October teeing off at 1200 followed by Steak night back at the Elburton. Mick then handed over to the Captain Chris Mavin.
Mr Captain started with thanking the staff of the Elburton for the food, he than went on to say how great it was to see another good turn out and in such wonderful weather. Chris went on to say thanks to the committee for their work in running the Society, and hoped to see as many as possible for the last match of the season at Stover.
All done it was back to the bar for a few more light refreshments before going home tired but happy
See you all next month
Match Report Stover GC
Thursday 24th October 2019
Well what a turn out for the last game of the Season, 19 players and the weather fine. As this was the last game we started out in Eclectic order, with Mike, Ken & Graham leading the way and just 4 points separated Mike & Ken. Great to see our guest Steve Deaton playing so well and a little bit of handicap protection on the back nine. Mike & Ken could not be separated as they both came in with the same scores so the 4 points remained the difference. Golf over it was back to the Elburton for Steak night, fines and prizes.
Once again great food, fines were bantered around the table and Bill Sandell fined all those that lost a ball today.
So it was down to the prizes:
Only the 2nd 2 club this season and the £19.00 went to John Lockwood
NTP went to John Lockwood
LD went to our guest Steve Deaton
Main prizes
In 3rd place with 32 point went to Ricky Lee
In 2nd place with 35 point and the runner up trophy went to Mick Speller
In 1st place also with 35 points (on count back) and the winners trophy went to our guest Steve Deaton
(and a generous handicap cut due)
On the Eclectic side it was close to the end,
In 3rd place with 51 points was Graham Haffenden
In 2nd place with 57 points was Mr Steady Ken Elford
And the Eclectic winner 2019 with 61 points was Mike Ward
Well done to all.
Mick Speller reminded everyone that the menu for the xmas dinner was on the web and for those that have not done so, please let either Bill or Mick know their and guests meal choices. The list will close on Wednesday 20th November, giving the Elburton plenty of time to prepare. Not forgetting a small present for the Charity Xmas Raffle. Mick then handed over to Mr Captain Chris Mavin.
Chris said as he was pushed to be down in Cornwall tonight, he would keep it short, but said he would give his main speech at the Xmas dinner. He thanked the staff of the Elburton for their support and good food throughout the season, his committee for their hard work keeping the Society running, but most of all the member for their support during his tenure as Captain and the comradery shown amongst all the players. He looks forward to the Xmas dinner and a great night to end this years Season.
It was back to the bar for a few more light refreshments before going home tired but happy
See you all at the xmas do.
