Well the weather Gods were with us as we started another new season, our 15th. With 18 players, we set out to do battle on what was a very trying course. Due to the adverse weather over the winter, the course had been cut and rolled, leaving it very difficult to hold the greens. We were lucky that the past few days had been dry, thus allowing buggies out on the course. Bacon rolls tea/coffee behind us, it was out to test our skills after (for some of us) a long winter break. It was never going to be a big score that won today, but the scores that came in were all fairly close together with only 5 points covering the top 9 players.
Golf over it was back to the Ships Tavern for food and fines, plus the presentation of prizes. First of all we all said a big thank you to our Sponsor Dave Foley for once again providing us with our own MagilyGS shirts (Bright Orange), well done Dave and as john Lockwood said ‘we will not get lost in the fog with these on’. Many thanks went to the Ships Tavern staff and Mark for providing us with superb Fish and Chips, and looking after us as usual.
On to the prizes, only one 2 club and that went to Chris Mavin, who most kindly re donated the £18.00 back into the club funds. Cheers Chris. Nearest the pin went to Bill Sandell, whilst the longest drive went to Tony Young. So in 3rd place it was Mike Ward with 28 points and his first eagle on the par 5 17th , runner up was Phil Davidson with 29 points and the runner up trophy, but the overall winner was Tony Young with 30 points and the winners trophy.
As our Captain Ken Elford could not make it back, it was our vice-Captain Mark Vinall who said his thanks to Phil Davidson for his tenure as Captain last year, and reiterated all our thanks to Dave Foley John and Mick for all they do for the Society. Kept to a short speech, Mark hoped to see everyone next month at Looe bin Down on the 20th April. It was now back to the bar for a few light refreshments before retiring for the evening, Happy that our new season has started well.
Match Report – Looe Bin-Down
Wednesday 20th April 2016
What a turn out, considering that a few were away, we had 18 players ready to do battle. No rain but the wind was horrendous. Thus making it a very trying day. We all started off with a photo shoot with our new Orange shirts, and then split up into our teams for the day. As well as our usual format, we had once again a small team comp as well. So it was off to do battle with Nicks team leading the way, followed by the rest of us. As said the wind was very trying to say the least, and made life somewhat difficult out there. But we all survived and made it back in one piece, all being a little windswept.
It was then back to the Ships tavern to add up the scores have a drink and get some food down those hungry throats. Considering the weather, some very good scores came in. Everyone here, it was time to eat, and Mark had put on the Carvery (what a meal), this was except for Mr Captain Ken Elford who missed out last time and had fish & Chips.
Meal over it was time for fines and presentations. The mini team competition of five teams went as follows: Kens team 81 points, Marks team 81 points, Nicks team 82 points, Bills team 89 points, and the winners with 100 points went to Dave Hoods team (Dave, Henry, Paddy & Mick). The Nearest the Pin went to Mike Crocker, with the Longest Drive going to Dave Hood. We thanked the sponsors for this namely Richard Trafford & John Lines. Next Month’s Sponsors are Howard Coffey & Bill Sandell.
On to the main prizes: in third place (if only he had got more of his driver away) was Henry Cooper with 31 points and a new handicap of 27, in second place with a score of 34 points went to Bill Sandell and the runner up trophy. With the winners Trophy going to Dave Hood with a great round of 36 points, and a cut as the SSS was 35.
Mr Captain thanked everyone including our sponsor Dave Foley his team and the Ships Tavern for once again providing excellent food and for looking after us. Not forgetting that next month we will be at Dainton park on the 18th May teeing off at 1300. It was time to go back into the bar for further light refreshments before going home wind swept but happy.

Wednesday 18th May 2016
What a really good turn out with 19 players set to do the business. Great to see Sean Mitchell with us again, and our other guest Bill Rowell playing as a guest of Phil Davidson. I would like to say now, a speedy recovery for Nick Carter, plus our thoughts are with Steve Reeve as he has family medical problems.
Tea/Coffee and Bacon rolls put away, it was off to tackle the course. Thankfully the rain held off, and although some sporadic gusts of wind, all went well. Apart from Mike Ward, it was our two guests that were showing us the way. The course was in good nick and the greens very fast and unpredictable.
All finished, it was back to the Ships Tavern to add up the scores, and have a light refreshment before going in to eat. Big Breakfast gone, it was time for fines and prizes. Our sponsors for the NTP/LD were Bill & Howard (many thanks). NTP went to Tony Young and the LD went to Richard Trafford. Only one 2 club today and that went to Mike Ward, who kindly put the £19 back into the club funds. On to the main event, and in 3rd place was Bill Rowell with 35 points, in 2nd place it was Sean Mitchell beating Bill on countback with 35 points, but todays winner with a very good score of 37 points went to Mike Ward and a new handicap of 19. Mike gave his apologies for not being at the evening meal and Phil took his award for him.
Mr Captain thanked our Sponsor and his team, plus a big thank you once again to the Ships Tavern for looking after us as usual. Next Month will be at the China Fleet Club on Wednesday 15th June teeing off at 1300. Sponsors for the NTP & LD are Chris & Tony.
Prizes, speeches over it was time to go back into the bar for a few more light refreshments before going home pleased with our days work.
Match Report: China Fleet Club
3rd August 2016
Well it was third time lucky, after two wash outs in June. Yes we finally got to play China Fleet Club. With 17 players out to do the business, (welcome back to John Lockwood after a very nasty accident) the weather was kind to us, even though it did threaten to rain on a few occasions during the afternoon. Once again not a high scoring match but very tight at the top, with the first seven players within 4 points of each other. There were three 2 clubs – Mick Speller, Harry Bradley & Richard Trafford.
Game over, it was back to the Ships Tavern for Food, Fines and Prizes. Thanks went to Dave Hood for sponsoring the Longest Drive & Nearest the Pin. Nearest the Pin went to Harry Bradley, whilst the Longest Drive went to Richard Trafford. As stated, it was very close at the top, in 4th place it was Bill Sandell beaten on count back by Ken Elford 3rd place both with 31 points, in second place again beaten on count back with 32 points was Mike Ward and the runner up trophy, but once again in 1st place was Dave Hood with 32 points and the winners trophy. A special well done went to our Sponsor Dave Foley who came in with a very good 30 points.
Food, fines and prizes over, thanks went out to the Ships tavern for looking after us, the committee for their job, plus a get well soon for John Lines who had to give up after nine holes as he has not been too well. Now for the next match of the season, Trethorne on Wednesday 17th August. Yes it is Captain v Sponsor for the claret Jug, as well as our normal stableford match. Let’s not forget to take two shirts with you (Pink & Orange) for what hopefully will be a great day and a very competitive one.
Talking done, it was back to the bar for a few light refreshments before retiring for the night.
TRETHORNE
Another fine day at Trehorne with 14 players to do battle.
This was to be a very much a high handicappers course and conditions as most finished in the top half of the table. Our winner off 27 with a great score of 38pts was local boy Dave Lockwood, 2nd was Chris Mavin on 36, NTP was John Lockwood and with his new driver doing the biz Richard Trafford took the longest drive, Dave Hood had an away-day securing last place with just 22pts. the club throwing competition was AGAIN won by an un-opposed Tony Young.
Back to the clubhouse for a carvery, fines and a few words from our Captain before heading home
Wishing Mick a speedy recovery, but if he is not fully fit there are a couple of "comfort huts" on the course at Staddon just in case.
The Captain v Sponsors match will hopefully be at Staddon on the 21st Sept. so see as many of you there as possible.
Match Report Elfordliegh GC
20th July 2016
Well after a total wash out in June, we finally got to play golf. A good day and 16 players with a few missing Phil Looking after his children, Nick working, John Lockwood recovering from a nasty fall (get better soon) and Mr Captain Ken who’s wife Jan had a nasty fall (we wish her a speedy recovery).
So it was off to play, with the course very hard and greens unreadable, we did our best. No big scores, and some of us struggled a bit, but it was so nice to be out playing once more. Golf over, it was back to the Ships Tavern for food, fines and presentations.
Thanks went to Chris & Tony for sponsoring the NTP & LD. Nearest the pin went to Mark Vinall (great shot), and the Longest drive went to Graham Haffenden (welcome back Graham). So to the main prizes, in third place beaten on count back with 30 points went to Graham Haffenden, in second place with 30 points and runner up trophy went to Paddy Fitzgerald (well done), but the winner with a very steady round and 32 points went to Dave Hood along with the winners trophy.
Vice-Captain Mark Vinall thanked everyone and wished Kens wife a speedy recovery, along with John Lockwood. He thanked his committee and our sponsor Dave Foley, and in return we thanked both Mark and his staff for looking after us. Mick Speller reminded everyone that after the re-arranged match at China Fleet on the 3rd August, we have our Captain V Sponsors match at Trethorne on the 17th. Please ensure that you have two shirts (this years & last years so Orange & Pink) for the teams. Not only will this be a match for the cup, it will also be a standard stapleford Competition as well.
Fines food and prizes over, it was back to the bar for a few light refreshments, before retiring for the night, happy and tired. See you all on the 3rd hopefully and lets do battle on the 17th.
STADDON
Another fine turnout, good weather and a course in excellent conditions with very fast greens helped to give most of us a very enjoyable day.
It was nice to see Steve Body back playing today but missed Mick, Dave F., Richard and Harry all with very good reasons for non-attendance so no fines there.
The results today gives us a 2 horse race for eclectic champion, Dave Hood and Mike Ward with only 1 point between them, roll on Stover.
Todays winner with 39pts (5 birdies in a row on the back 9) was Phil Davidson, Ken beat Mukka on countback with 34pts for runners up trophy and Henry was the recipient of the 3 balls with 20pts. Paddy was the only one with a 2 so won all the 17 golf balls. The longest drive was a cracker by "Hot Shot "Howard and Mukka was neatest the pin. JohnLines took the club throwing award away from playing partner Tony Young.
Back to the Ship for a few wets, the popular carvery, fines, the presentation, a speech from our Captain and general abuse all round, all being overseen by Bill Sandell standing in for Mick.with thanks again to the staff at the Ship.
Don't forget that at Stover on the 19th Oct. it is an earlier tee time 12.00 and it is Ryder cup day so remember to bring orange and pink shirts.
See you all there hopefully.
John
Match Report Stover
19th October 2016
Well it has come to the end of yet another very successful season, and Stover GC was the setting for not only the last match of the season but the prestigious Captain v Sponsor Ryder Cup. 18 players, so two teams of nine were drawn out of the hat in Handicap order, with the Captains team in Pink and the Sponsors team in Orange we set out to do the business. Not only a Ryder cup but also our last 18 hole Stableford competition as well, so all was to play for there as well. A real unfortunate was that we lost three players Bill Sandell, Dave Hood & Howard Coffey (stuck in France), so Dave Hood could not score in the last game, thereby handing the Eclectic to Mike Ward.
Ryder Cup Teams:
So it was that the Sponsors team won this year with 5 ½ to 3 ½
The Stableford competition was very close for minor placings, with in third place beaten on count back was Paddy Fitzgerald with 31 points, Runner up with 31 points went to John Lines but the winner with 36 points went to Roger Cox. Thanks go to Paddy & Dave Lockwood for sponsoring the NTP & LD.
NTP went to Mark Vinall and the LD went to Tony Young.
After a long day, it was back to the Ships Tavern for drinks and a well-deserved Steak Supper (Fish for some). Food, Fines and prizes over it was down to Mr Captain to say a few words. He congratulated our Sponsors Team for winning the Ryder Cup and especially Dave Foley for his continued support. A big thank you went to the Ships Tavern (Mark and his Staff) for looking after us all season. A vote of thanks went to John & Mick for their work behind the scenes all season.
Mick went on to say that the Xmas do is on the 14th December 7.30 for 8.00pm, details are on the web, and please let either john or myself know what you and your partner will be having. Not forgetting a small prize for the Charity Raffle. The Players Player of the Year will be collected on the Xmas do night and awarded at the AGM in January. Everything done and dusted it was back to the bar for a few light refreshments before retiring for the night.
See you all at the Xmas do in December.
