Well at last we had the weather to kick start the season. Great to see 18 of us out to play, which included 3 guests, Martin Walker, Ken Taylor & Robin Phillips. So with baited breath off we went with the possibility of some heavy showers on the way round. Fortunately we only had a couple of showers which did not hold up any proceedings at all. I think everyone was a little rusty after the winter break, with many of us not hitting a ball since we played at Stover in October. This showed in the final scores, which ended up with a SSS of 34.
Back to the Elburton for food fines and presentations. The first of which was the Charity donation with the help of Santander of £500 to the Chestnut appeal. This was also matched when Howard Coffey raised £100 in his Whitliegh store for Movember. Thus making a total of £700. Well done to everyone.
On to the presentations for the golf:
No 2 club – so money goes back into the pot.
Nearest the Pin went to Ken Elford
Longest Drive went to Phil Davidson
3rd Place was Dave Hood with 30 points
2nd and runner up trophy went to Graham Haffenden with 32 points
1st place and winners Trophy went to Chris (Deputy Lord Mayor) Mavin with 34 points
Food and fines over, Mr Captain Paddy Fitzgerald thanked everyone for playing and hoped that as many as possible would be at Staddon Heights next month 23rd May for our second outing of the year. He also thanked the Elburton for the food (great Fish & Chips) and the staff.
There being no other business, it was back to the bar for a few more light refreshments before going home tired but happy.

Wednesday 23rd May 2018
What a glorious day (sorry that I could not play), 18 players out to do the business, with new guests playing for the first time, so welcome to Geoff Jones and Chris Thorpe, plus nice to see that Martin Walker has joined the society, again welcome. So tea/coffee bacon roll inside, and fit to go, it was off out in the afternoon sunshine to try our best to beat the course. In the end it was pretty close for the top three, if only Steve Body didn’t blob the last two holes You never know.
Evening time and everyone gathered back at the Elburton, for food fines and prize giving. Food over (what a great meal), fines done, it was down to prizes. First of all it was nice to present at long last the winners trophy 2016 Stover to Roger Cox, who we kept missing for one reason or another. Well done Roger.
With no 2 club the money goes into the pot for later in the year.
Longest Drive went to Mike Ward
Nearest the Pin went to Roger Cox
In 3rd place with 33 points was Steve Body (if only Steve !!!)
In 2nd place with 33 points (count back) was Roger Cox and the runner up Trophy
But this months winner with 35 points was Dave Hood and the Winners Trophy
Mick was sorry he could not play and asked the members to put their hands together for Bill Sandell for organising the whole day. Again welcomed the new guests and hoped that they enjoyed their day and hope to see them again playing for the Society. Handing over to the vice captain Chris Mavin, who again thanked everyone especially the staff for such a great meal, and hoped to see as many as possible next month at St. Austell.
Dave Hood asked everyone to pick up there glass and toast the sad loss of Mark Vinall’s (last years Captain)wife Natalee who sadly passed away earlier this week. Our fullest condolences go to Mark and his Family at this very sad time.
Proceedings over it was back to the bar for just a few more light refreshments before going home.
Hope to see you all next month.
Match Report St. Austell
20th June 2018
Well what a day, it started with 18 then 15 and ended up with 13 players. Weather a bit overcast with the occasional light drizzle but warm. A first for a long time when we welcomed Dave Hoods wife Jo back into the fold. This day turned out to be a Roger Cox day, with him stripping the field of prizes, not to mention winning the match. Bill Sandell was going along like a train, but a little lapse left him in second place.
Golf over, it was back to the Elburton for Food, Fines & Prizes. Excellent food (Ham, Eggs & Chips) went down well. Fines out of the way, it was down to the prizes:
With two getting a 2 club, the money was shared by John Lines and Roger Cox
Both the NTP/LD went to non other than Roger Cox
In 3rd place was Chris Mavin with 32 points
In 2nd Place was Bill Sandell with 38 points
But in 1st place with 40 points and a cut went to Roger Cox
As both Captain/V Captain were away this month, Mick thanked the staff of the Elburton, and those that played today. Thanks also went to the committee for their efforts in making this society run smoothly. Mick then handed over to Bill Sandell for an update on John Lines.
Bill stated that John has been a founder member of the society and done so much in helping it to run the way it has, and therefore the society will donate £100.00 (£50.00 to each charity) after the sad loss of his wife Cindy. Bill also gave the timings of the funeral and dress code.
There being nothing else, it was back to the bar for a few more light refreshments.
Hope to see you all next month at Dainton Park on the 25th July
Match Report Dainton Park
25th July 2018
The summer weather rolls on (phew), with 19 players fed and watered, it was off to do battle on what was to be a very high scoring day. Really great to see both of our lady members out today namely Jo Hood and Jo Trafford, and yes both were up there at the top end of the leaderboard. With 9 players scoring 30 points or better, this was one of the highest scoring rounds of golf we have seen for a very long time. Well done all. The final battle at the top was a 3 way split covered by 1 point, as shown in the final scores.
Hot and very tired, it was back to the Elburton for Food, Fines & Prizes. Many thanks to the Staff for such a late start to our meal, and a great meal it was to. Fines over and a tear felt thanks from John Lines for the Money gifted to his late wife Cindy and the Charities they supported. This was supported by Dave Hood who said that it was our pleasure considering the amount of support John has given over the last 14 years.
With no 2 club, the money goes into the club funds for Christmas/Charity
Not surprising the Longest drive was won again by Roger Cox
The Nearest the Pin was won by Mike Ward
Now to the top three:
If only Harry did not blob the 11th, so with 39 points and 3rd place goes to Harry Bradley
What a round of golf Dave 23 point on the front nine, 17 on the back and with a total of 40 points, beaten on count back into 2nd place goes to Dave Lockwood
Yes its that man again (the Roger Cox Show), and yes a cracking round of golf with back to back 20 points, so once again and beating Dave Lockwood on count back 1st place with 40 points goes to Roger Cox.
Mick thanked all of those that played today and reminded that next month on a difficult course was Wrangaton on the 22nd August teeing off at 1330, and only 4 buggies available.
As Mr Captain Paddy was not available, Mr Vice Chris Mavin again thanked everyone, especially the staff of the Elburton and his committee and hoped to see as many as possible next month.
Formalities over, it was back to the bar for a few more light refresments before going home tired but happy. Well don all – see you next month

Wednesday 22nd August 2018
Well another fine day and a great turn out of 18 players. Tea/coffee bacon rolls put away, it was off to do battle on what is a course of two halves. With 10 players coming in with scores of 27 plus, it turned out not too bad, even if the front nine is in the lap of the gods to where your ball will actually land up.
So golf over, it was back to the Elburton for Food, fines and prizes. Great food Fish & Chips, which went down very well indeed. Fines went well with lots of little ditty’s of what was and was not correct out there on the course, and who done or did not do.
So it was down to the prizes. Well the 2 club was just like the busses, we have nothing for a few months and then along come four 2 clubs on one day, so sharing £4.50 each was Tony Young, Dave Hood Mike Ward plus his guest Dave Bothma.
Nearest the pin went to Mikes Guest Dave Bothma
Longest Drive went to that man again Roger Cox with what was classed as a Mega Drive.
So it was down to the main competition
In 3rd place with a superb back nine of 21 points beating Dave Hood on count back went to Bill Sandell on 34 points.
In 2nd place beaten on count back, yes you can not keep this man down, was Roger Cox with 37 points and the runner up trophy
A long time coming, yes he is back, also with 37 points and taking the winners trophy went to Phil Davidson.
Although not playing (crocked again) Mick thanked everyone for helping Bill sort things out on the Day, and reminded everyone that next month it was Stover on Thursday 20th September teeing off at 1330. It was also mentioned as to what was the date of the Xmas do, and that is as per the AGM on Wednesday 5th December at the Elburton.
Mr Vice Chris Mavin thanked everyone and asked for all to put their hands together for the Staff of the Elburton. He also mentioned how great the comradeship was within the society, which made playing golf a pleasure and good fun. Long may it last. Last but not least Chris thanked his committee and hoped to see as many as possible next month at Stover.
So it was back to the bar for just a few more light refreshments before going home. Thanks to all, hope to see you next month

Wednesday 17th October 2018
Weather not really on our side, 19 players set out to do the business. Fed and watered it was out to see how the course would hold up. Wet and greens very soggy, but overall everyone got round ok. Of course the scores in general matched the conditions out there, that is except one, who ripped up the course on his way to 37 points with 3 blobs.
Golf over, it was get into dry clothing and off to the Elburton for Steak night/Fish & Chips. Great meal and thanks to Elburton staff. Fines went down very well, in fact one of the best so far, with the likes of Harry and a few others needing a second mortgage to pay their way.
So it was down to the prize giving:
With only one two club the £19 went to Dave Lockwood with a 2 on the 10th
Longest Drive went to John Lockwood
Nearest the Pin went to Richard Trafford
In second place with 32 point was Ken Elford and the runner up Trophy
But in first place with 37 points and 3 blobs plus a cut of 2 strokes was that man Phil Davidson for the second time in a row. Well done Phil.
Mick handed out the Players Player of the year envelopes for everyone, and those that have not had one will give out next time. This award will be presented at the Xmas dinner.
Mick also gave out xmas dinner menu sheets for all to fill in and get back to him, so as to put the orders on the master sheet. Again those not having one, will give out next time. Please email me with your and guests choices.
One the subject of games, I have provisionally book Borringdon for Wednesday 14th teeing off around 1200. Will have confirmation hopefully Friday this week.
Mr Captain Paddy Fitzgerald, asked everyone to thank the staff for their support. He also thanked all those that played today and the manner in which this society runs. He also stated that although he had not attended all the matches this year, he was very honoured to be the Captain.
All done, it was back to the bar for a few more light refreshments

Match Report Wednesday 14th November
Well the weather was at last on our side, and 16 players made the last match of the season. Tea/coffee bacon roll put away, it was off to do the business. A lot was at stake here today with the top 3 of the Eclectic very close indeed, and so it remained right to the end with a very close outcome. Everyone else was out there enjoying the last game and it was great to see both Henry Cooper and Howard Coffey back playing, and both coming in with very good scores. Golf over early it was back to the Eburton for a Fish & Chip supper, which as usual was top class and went down well.
Fines over, it was down to the prizes and outcome of the 2018 Eclectic winner.
Only one 2 club and the £16.00 went to Dave Hood
NTP was won by Howard Coffey
LD was won by Graham Haffenden
On the main game
In 3rd place with 34 points was Graham Haffenden
In 2nd place with 37 points and the runner up trophy went to Dave Hood
In 1st place with 38 points and the winners trophy went to Bill Sandell
Well done to all golfers who not only played today but throughout the season.
As said the 2018 Eclectic went down to the wire, with only 5 points separating the top three.
In 3rd place with 48 points was Bill Sandell
In 2nd place and pipped to the post with 52 points was Roger Cox
Once again and in 1st place and the Eclectic Winner with 53 points was Dave Hood.
Mick asked that all those that have not yet put down for the xmas meal, please let him know so as to put it on the main menu. All envelopes are now in for the Players Player of the Year, which will be announced at the Xmas Dinner. Mick also stated that the prices of the xmas meal would be as follows so as to help with costs. 2 course meal £17.00 and 3 course meal £20.00. this covers tips to staff etc.
Mr captain was unable to attend the evening meal, so Mr Vice Chris Mavin first of all thanked the staff of the Elburton for a wonderful evening meal and their support for the season and forthcoming xmas dinner. He thanked everyone for their comradeship friendliness and above all the way that Magily GS promotes itself at the various venues we attend. He hoped to see as many as possible at the xmas dinner and next season to continue the Magily GS spirit.
All done it was back to the bar for just a few more light refreshments before going home
See you all at the Xmas dinner
