Match Reports 2015
Match Report Elfordliegh
25th March 2015
Well it was off to a very good start to the Season, although only 13 players. The weather was kind all being a bit chilly towards the end of play. Tea/Coffee Bacon rolls down the hatch, it was off to play. Greens were not really up to standard, but that did not stop some very good scores coming in. First game over, it was back to the Ship for a few beverages and a very welcomed Sausage & Mash meal.
Fines over and done with, it was time for the presentations etc. We welcomed a new member Chris Mavin to the fold, and it did not take him long to get on the winning side of life with the longest drive prize.
Nearest the pin went to Mark Vinell. Sponsors today were Bill Sandell & Dave Hood.
Ken Elford came in Runner up with 33 points and a cut of 0.6 and a new handicap of 12. But the winner with a splendid 36 points went to Mike Ward and a cut 0f 1.2 and a new handicap of 22. With the SSS being 37, it also saw Tony Young drop 0.3 to a new handicap of 22.
Mr Captain Phil Davidson, thanked everyone, and in particular Dave Foley for his continued support and provision of the new shirts for 2015 (PINK), plus thanks to Mark and his team at the Ship for the food etc. Phil and Nick called on those that are going on the away weekend to ensure that all payments are made by close of play on the 15th July (China Fleet Match), they also stated that there are still places available.
Food and fines over it was back to the bar for a few beverages, but it was not to be for long, as almost everyone was either tired, knackered or had to be elsewhere, and all were gone by 9.30. So it is goodnight to you all, and see you once again on the first Tee at Dainton Park on the 22nd April.

Match Report Dainton Park
22nd April 2015
What a fantastic day to play golf. 19 players being fed and watered prior to going out to do battle. Five teams playing not only for the main individual prizes but as a team competition as well. Team Photo taken in our new PINK Shirts (Mike Speller embarrassed as he did not check the camera’s batteries), so only enough for one photo before the camera went dead. (Duly fined). Great game and the course was in perfect condition. Scores coming in were very good with 8 players with 30 points or more. Our guest player for today was Simon Heeson who came in with a very good score of 32 points. But it was down to Dave Hood and Nick Carter with 37 points apiece to share the spoils, with Nick just edging it on countback.
There was two two clubs today both by Nick Carter, who kindly put the £19.00 back into the club funds (sorry but forgot to mention the two clubs when doing the presentation), Many thanks Nick. Longest Drive went to Richard Trafford, while the Nearest the pin went to Mark Vinell. The team competition went as follows: Ken’s Team 81, Marks Team 83, Dave’s Team 98, Richards Team 102, and the winners were Nick’s Team with 104.
So back to the Ships Tavern for Food and prize giving. What a great meal, full Carvery that went down a treat, well done the ships Tavern staff. Before the fines started, Mr Captain reminded everyone of his newly enforced dress code. That being 2015 shirts for the match, and a Magily shirt for the evening. Those that did not comply were duly fined a £1.00. lots of fines and funny incidents over, it was Mr Captain that thanked our Sponsor, Committee, and the staff of the Ships Tavern. Phil and Nick were also taking money for the away weekend, and stated that we now have the 16 required.
Phil also stated that an away day back down to Bowood park for Wednesday 13thMay, cost of some £31.00 I believe. All those interested please contact Phil. Last but not least, Dave Foley had been given a free 4 ball pass for a selection of Courses. This was a charity item and the proceeds were going to CLICK. It was decided after discussions around the table, that we all put £5.00 into the pot and draw one name out. £70.00 raised to go to CLICK and the winner was John Lockwood.
So it was back to the bar for a few light refreshments before all going home, tired and slightly red faced (sun), and looking forward to next Month at Trethorne.
Match Report Trethorne Golf Club
20th May 2105
What a great turn out. 20 players at Trethorne Golf Club for a day of food and fun. Bacon rolls tea/coffee/beer out the way it was out to challenge the course. With five teams of four, it was again the same competition as last month, which was not only for the main prizes but also as a team.
The weather was great, the course in good nick, and the teams out on the green stuff trying their best. Some really good scores were being put together, once again by Nick Carter & Dave Hood but it was a guest player that was shining the most, as Phil Amplete was ripping the course up with 21 point on the front nine.
There were two 2 clubs with Mark Vinall on the 8th and Nick Carter on the 16th. But our guest player Phil held on to win with a very good score of 40 points and taking first prize from Nick Carter 2nd with 37 points and Dave Hood 3rd with 36 points.
Nearest the pin went to Mark Vinall & The longest Drive went to Nick Carter. Thanks to Ken & Tony for today’s sponsorship of the LD & NTP prizes. The team competition went as follows: Kens team 92 points, Nicks team 94 points, Marks team 97 points, Richards team 98 points, and the winners with 111 points was Dave Hoods team. (Dave, Mick S, Dave L, and Tony).
Golf over it was time to eat, and a very good Carvery & Dessert it was to. Fines went around the table as usual, with our Resident guest speaker giving his renditions of what went wrong out on the course (Mark Vinall) especially toward Howard and his lack of course knowledge. It was also great to see our guests today Phil, Mike, Harry (who has joined), and our old mate Sean back amongst us after so long away.
Mr Captain Phil Davidson thanked everyone for coming, and again commented on the great turn out. He thanked his committee and the staff of (Bowood))(fined) Trethorne for the food. Phil also mentioned that we have now got 20 for the away weekend, and that all money is to be paid no later than the China Fleet match 15th July. Phil also said that another away day has been planned for Looe Golf club in June. Details of which will be put out on the Web.
Day finally over, it was off home, to look forward to next month at Whitsand Bay.
Match Report – Whitsand Bay GC
Wednesday 17th June 2015
Once again it was over the border and into Cornwall for our match at Whitsand Bay. A great turn out with 19 players set to do the business. The teams were split with 4 four balls and 1 three ball, with again a separate competition as a team. Although a little difficult, the links course stood up to its measure, with unpredictable bounces and greens that you just could not read. But the scores were coming in thick and fast with seven players coming in with scores of 30 plus. Third place tied with 34 point were Dave Hood, Ken Elford and Bill Sandell beating the other two on count back. Second was one of our new members Harry Bradley with a very good score of 35 points, but the winner and one who has a great deal of course knowledge was our vice-Captain Steve Reeve with 37 points and a cut.
Our thanks to our sponsors this month Nick Carter & Chris Mavin for providing the NTP & LD prizes. Dave Hood took the NTP, with Ken Elford taking the LD prize. The team competition was once again won by Dave Hoods Team with 112 points, well done. The other scores were as follws:
Marks team 87 points, Nicks Team 91 points, Kens team 98 points and Bills team 99 points.
So golf over, it was back to the Ships Tavern for a full English Breakfast, fines and a chorus of Happy Birthday to Nick Carter. Prizes given out and thanks to those that played, Mr Captain thanked our sponsor, committee and the Ships Tavern for the food and looking after us. He also requested that all those going on the away weekend ensure that they are fully paid up by the end of play 15th July (China Fleet match). All done, it was back to the bar for light refreshments before going home tired but happy.
Match Report China Fleet GC
Wednesday 15th July 2015
What a great day, 19 players out to do the business. It was the now standard format of team and individual competition. So it was off we jolly well go in our teams, and boy was there some scores coming in. nine players returning a score of 30 points plus. The highlight of the round was on the par three 12th hole, when Steve Reeve put his ball straight on the green and down for a Hole-In-One. Congratulations Steve, and it has cost him £40.00 plus the outright 2 club money, to which will be put to good use on the away weekend at Ashbury. (Trophy on its way).
Golf over, it was back to the Ships Tavern to tot up the scores, food and fines. With a very good score Chris Mavin was 3rd with 36 points, 2nd once again was Dave Hood with 37 points, but the winner with a very good round was Nick Carter with 39 points. A speedy recovery goes to John Lockwood, Richard Trafford and Dave Foley.
Match Report Away Weekend Ashbury Manor
Before I start, may I on behalf of all the Society, thank both Nick Carter & Phil Davidson for all their hard work in putting on a great weekend.
Friday 21st.
Well it was all packed and away we go, off to Ashbury for the Society weekend. Some of us managed to get there early and played nine holes in the morning. But the main game was on the Kigbeare course at 1328.
Paired up in our teams, it was off to do battle, and a team of 25 players went out (welcome to our guests for the weekend, Chubby Osbourne, Cocky Arnold, George, Pete Dawe & Knobby). Not everyone was staying the weekend, but really great to see such a good turn out. The weather was against us in the afternoon, and playing conditions along with the length of the course got to a few of us. Some really good scores came in and in third place Harry Bradley with 34 points, second place went to Mike Ward with 37 points and a cut, but first place went to returning player Roger Cox with 41 points and a big cut. Nick Carter won the Longest Drive, with Ken Elford winning the Nearest the Pin. The draw was then carried out to decide who was to be in which Team for Saturdays Ryder cup. Captains team v Sponsors team
By this time we said our goodbyes to those not staying, and welcomed Steve & Theo Reeve who could not make the afternoon match. Steve was awarded with his hole in one trophy and photoframe of his card. There was a lot of walking wounded by supper time, Dave Hood with a broken hand, Dave Foley, John Lines & Phil Davidson Knees, Mick Speller bad back. All survived and after supper returned to the bar/Bowling alley for some light entertainment, and a few refreshments. Very tired it was off to bed to recoup for the main battle on Saturday.
Saturday 22nd
It’s Ryder Cup day. Breaking news (Dave Foley our sponsor had to return home with his knee playing up very badly). Mr Captain Phil Davidson declared that their game would be an Honourable half. So it was Sponsors team (Pinkies) v Captains team (Blues) setting out to do the business. Had to take my hat off to Dave Hood who played with a broken hand up to the point where he could no longer grip properly and had to concede. The morning score came in and a resounding win of 6.5 to 3.5 to the Sponsors team. Lunch time over and it was back out to the Willows par three course (with Trilby’s) for the afternoon game (same teams). Everyone had put in £2.00 for the TWO’s, and they were coming thick and fast, but all that was wiped out by Roger Cox getting a hole in One on the 3rd hole, and winning the pot. Great fun was had by all and following the morning score the Sponsors team won 6 – 3 in the afternoon games.
Back, watered, showered and ready to go for the evening, we all met up at 1845 for the prize giving and raffle. Once again we thanked both Nick & Phil for setting up the weekend, and thanked our guests for coming and hoped that they had enjoyed our company as much as we enjoyed theirs. Roger Cox was given the pot for getting a hole in one, and gave it straight back to put into the kitty (Thank you Roger). Knobby won the Nearest the pin, while Tony Cunningham won the Longest Drive. A special award was given to Young Theo Reeve by Howard Coffey, who praised Theo for his ability and game play and warned the rest of us that he will be a person to contend with in the future. Mr Captain Phil Davidson handed the Ryder Cup Claret Jug to Nick Carter in Dave Foleys absence and was duly filled with Port. Mr Captain also handed out a sleeve of balls to each of the Sponsors team. Raffle over it was off to supper, and a few more Ports. After Supper there was a few that went down to play Snooker, some watched the rugby and others totally wiped out went to bed.
Sunday 23rd
Breakfast over it was time to go home, although our guests for the weekend went out to brave the rotten weather to play 18 holes. Said our goodbyes and off back to Plymouth, tired but happy that once again we had had a great weekend.
Match Report St. Austell
Wednesday 23rd September.
To start with, sorry its taken so long to get this report out. My computer was broken.
Well it was back down to Cornwall to St Austell GC, first time we have played here.
Yes it was unlucky as Nick Carter did not even finish the first hole, when he badly hurt his I believe his ankle and knee. Dave Hood thought everyone had gone home as he came out of the wilderness after a wayward shot. But Nick was taken back to the clubhouse, given a refund and rested up while the remainder continued to play the round.
What with several players pulling out for various reasons, it was unlucky for some 13 players.
Golf over it was back to the Ships Tavern for prizes and food. Sponsors for the NTP & LD were Mick Speller & Howard Coffey.
The NTP went to Steve Reeve while the LD went to John Lockwood.
Some very good scores were coming in and cuts were the order of the day.
The main competition was a very close call, with Dave Hood coming 3rd with 36 points, John Lockwood 2nd with 37 points, but 1st place went to Phil Davidson with 39 points.
As Nick was unable to carry on after his injury, an average score taken from the total scores of the day was given to him, giving him a score of 28 points and 5 eclectic points.
Gentlemen, all three of you now have a new Handicap.
Mick gave out for those that were there, this years Players Player of the Year Envelopes.
Please ensure you complete one by end of play at Stover.
John has the envelopes.
As Stover is our last game of the season, it is Steak/Gammon night back at the Ship.
Food/Fines over and prizes given out, Mr Captain thanked his committee and the Ships tavern for looking after us.
As for the Christmas do, it will be held at the Ships Tavern on Wednesday 9th December.
If in doubt let either John or myself know what you will be eating, and we will complete the form.
Plus in advance, PLEASE bring along a small raffle prize for the Charity draw on the night.
The menu is on the website, along with the booking form.
It was now back to the bar for light refreshments, before heading off home.
last but not least, get better soon Nick as it is very close at the top of the Eclectic scoreboard.
Hope to see as many of you as possible for the last game of the season at Stover.
Match Report Stover Golf Club
Wednesday 21st October 2015
Well it was the last match of the season, and we all met up at Stover Golf Club (for the first time). Nineteen players all set to go out in Eclectic order, on what was a very pleasant day and a golf course in immaculate order. As Dave H, Nick & Ken got us on the way as the top 3 in the eclectic order of merit, the rest of us awaited our turn. The course was playing very well with some really thinking holes and greens that were very hard to read. A lovely course to walk and comments made were that we must put this course down again for next season. The difficulty of the course and it being new to most players, meant that the scores coming in were good but no one broke Par.
Match over it was back to the Ships Tavern for Steak night, prizes and working out the scores on the doors to see who had finally won the Eclectic. The sponsors for the NTP/LD were Paddy Fitzgerald and Steve Reeve, thank you both. The minor prizes were: 2 club, only one Mick Speller, money put back in for the Xmas do. Longest Drive went to John Lockwood, whilst the NTP went to Harry Bradley. The main competition results were in 3rd place with 29 points John Lines & Chris Mavin, 2nd place with 30 points went to Harry Bradley, but once again in 1st place was Nick Carter (back from Ankle injury) with 33 points. So scores on the doors, it was time to reveal the Eclectic winner. In joint 3rd place it was Mike Ward & Dave Lockwood with 40 points, in 2nd place was last years’ winner Nick Carter with 57 points, but almost always the bridesmaid and never the bride, the winner with 61 points was Dave Hood.
Mick mentioned the Xmas do which is on Wednesday 9th December 1930 for 2000. Please let either John or Mick know who will be attending and your choice of menu. Please remember to bring a small raffle prize for the Charity Raffle. All details are on the Web. Last but not least, the man himself Mr Captain Phil Davidson thanked everyone for what has been yet again a very successful season, he thanked his committee Mick & John for all their hard work in making it all run smoothly. He also thanked Mark and his staff for looking after us all season and stated that he was looking forward to the Christmas Do. Phil also asked everyone to put their hands together for our Sponsor (ill in bed with Flu) Dave Foley for his continued sponsorship over what has now been some13 years. Bill Sandell also asked everyone to put their hands together for John & Mick, who he said did everything and we the golfers just turned up and played. Thank you Bill.
All done and it was back to the bar for a few more light refreshments, before retiring home to bed. See you all at the Xmas do on the 9th December.
