Match Report Boringdon Golf Club
Wednesday 19th April 2023
Well it was finally here, our first game of the season. With 14 players and a very windy day, tea/coffee Bacon rolls put away it was off to do the business. As said the wind was making life very difficult, but everyone got round safely. Most of the scores were in the low 20’s however 4 people managed a score in the high 20,s which for the conditions out there was very good indeed.
Tired and very windswept it was back to the Elburton for food, fines and prizes. Hats off to the Elburton staff the food was excellent, just what was needed after a hard day. Fines went down well with the usual banter of who did what and when and the money collected goes towards our funding over the season.
Prizes went as follows:
NTP 7th Chris Mavin
NTP 15th No one on the green so prize goes back into the pot.
In 3rd place beaten on countback and an excellent round of 29 points went to Jo Trafford
In 2nd place on countback and another good round of 29 points went to Graham Haffenden
In 1st place and a great back nine with 32 points went to Dave Hood.
Well done everyone who played today.
Mick Speller congratulated everyone on the turn out today, thanked the Elburton staff and went on to say about members who are in our thoughts. John Lines, Ken Elford and John Lockwood. He also thanked our Guest Chris and new member Rob Oak plus a welcome back to Reg Hackworthy.
Hopefully see another good turn out next month at China fleet Club GC on the 17th May teeing off at 1300. There being nothing else it was back to the bar for a few more light refreshments before going home tired and windswept.
See you all next month

Elfordliegh Gc Wednesday 21st June 2023
What a great turn out 17 players, and the weather really hot. The course was in a good condition considering the recent very hot and dry weather. With 17 playing we went out in a two ball, three ball and three four balls. Great to see guests and a new member Chris Groves. One four ball was what we called the Trafford Family 4 ball with Richard, Jo ,Jo’s Brother Ben and Family friend Chris Groves. Some really good scores were coming in, with the majority getting 25 points plus. The outstanding round came from Reg Hackworthy with a score of 40 point (with a blob), and Graham Haffenden 35 points. Great to see Bill Sandell coming in with 3rd place 32 points after all his recent health problems, and as said at the table a quick lesson up at Staddon Heights.
Golf over it was back to the Elburton where we were joined by more guests, Jo’s son Ryce and Chris Groves partner. Great food and a very noisy set of fines made the evening go down well. Food and fines over it was prize time:
NTP 6th hole went to our guest Ben Harmer and a bottle of wine
NTP 10th hole went to Chris Thorpe and a bottle of wine
Last place and 3 balls went to Chris Thorpe
3rd place went to Bill Sandell with 32 points
2nd place went to Graham Haffenden with 35 points and a bottle of wine
1st place went to Reg Hackworthy with 40 points and a bottle of wine plus a cut to 21.
Mr Captain Mick Speller thanked everyone for turning out to what was a great days golf, he and the members thanked the staff of the Elburton for looking after us. It was great to see yet another new member Chris Groves, and our guests Ben Harmer who played, Chris Groves partner and Jo Traffords son Ryce who joined us for the evening meal. Mick also mentioned that it was intended to have a memorial shield in memory of both Paddy and John, with thanks to Henry who provided the memorial trophy for Paddy. At this point Chris Groves said he would look into providing a suitable trophy/shield and then get back to us. Mick also thanked Graham Haffenden for all his service and support to the Society as he and his family move abroad and wished them every success applauded by all.
Last but not least, next month will be at Whitsand bay GC on Wednesday 19th July teeing off at 1230 (tea/coffee bacon roll o/a main food back at the Elburton). Hope to see as many as possible, and with that it was time to go back to the bar for a few more light refreshments before going home tired but happy.
Match Report Whitsand Bay GC Wednesday 19th July 2023.
With a small field this month of only 11 players and the weather on our side it was off over the border and into Cornwall for our match at Whitsand Bay. Tea/coffee and bacon roll on arrival went down well, and with that it was off to do business. As usual the links course got the better of a lot of us and the hedges/gorse found a few balls. Overall, the scores although a little low were well distributed throughout the players and we survived it all to tell the tale at some time in the future.
Golf over it was back to the Elburton for food fines and prizes. Food was as usual very good, and thanks went to the staff. Fines went down well with the usual banter being passed around the table on who done what and when. Next on the list was prizes, and that went as follows:
NTP in 2 shots on the 15th went to Reg Hackworthy and a bottle of wine
Hidden Holes with 10 points went to our guest player Steve Kitchen and a bottle of wine
In 3rd place with 28 points went to Reg Hackworthy
In 2nd place with 31 points went to Steve Body and a bottle of wine
The winner and 1st place with 32 points went to Howard Coffey and a bottle of wine.
Mr Captain Mick Speller thanked everyone that came today and welcomed our guest, Steve Kitchen. Along with this he welcomed Howards Brother in law who along with our own Ken Elford joined us for the evening meal. Mick also mentioned that he forgot in last month’s report that thanks went out to Henry Cooper who donated his 4 ball prize (xmas dinner raffle) to the society, giving us much needed funds back into the coffers. Also, Rob Oak who did not play due to an injury put in £20 for the kitty, Thanks Rob very kind of you, and to top that Reg put in a tenner at the end of the evening. Next month is a double header as pointed out by Steve Body, and that is Wednesday 16th August at Dainton Park teeing off at 1230, along with Wednesday 30th August at Staddon Heights teeing off at 1228. Lets hope we can have a good turn out on both venues. With that and again thanks to the staff we departed back into the bar for a few more light refreshments before going home.
Hope to see you all next month.

Wednesday 16th August 2023
Today we visited Dainton Park Golf Club, the weather gods were on our side.
It was hot and the course was well manicured, fairways and greens played true and everyone enjoyed the course. We welcomed Jo Hood back into the fold and Rhys both enjoyed the golf and the meal back at the Elburton. The scoring was very close and there was not a lot of difference in the scores from last to first.
The results for this month were as follows
1st place with 35 points ( on count back) was Richard Trafford. ( bottle of wine )
2nd place with 35 points was Bill Sandell. ( bottle of wine )
3rd place with 34 points was Reg (steady)Hackworthy
Holding everyone up was Rhys with 15 points ( £10 )
The 2 nearest the pins which were the 8th and the 15th
The 8th was won by Tony Young ( bottle of wine )
The 15th was won by Roger Cox (bottle of wine )
A massive thanks to Reg Hackworthy and Steve Body for escorting the 2 JOs around the course all four agreed they had a lovely day and enjoyed each others company.
After the prize giving and fines thanks was given to the Elburton for our evening meal and all retired to the bar for further refreshments.
It was mentioned that our next venue will be 30th August at Staddon Heights.
